| As in many of my projects, I don’t know how my clients have found me. I do know that this violin was made by a man with two children. The violin was eventually given to the son, who kept and maintained it for some number of years. He decided to present the violin to his sister, and wanted a display case designed and made. He provided me no restrictions. The violin sat in my gallery for some time, as things like this need to “cook” and “simmer” in my mind for me to realize what the piece needs. In the end I used Honduras Mahogany veneer for the case work and Black Ebony for the face accent strip. The non-glare glass is slid in from the top. At the upper edge of the glass is a slip fit piece of ebony that sits flush with the ebony veneer and has a fingernail access for removal. It acts as a dust cover. I supported the bottom of the violin on a key from a cello and used keys from a violin to hang the bow. The neck of the violin is kept in place by a device I designed that makes no marks on the violin and uses a rare earth magnet for retention and release. A hygrometer is in the lower left corner of the case. The client decided to personally deliver the violin and the case to his sister who lives in Phoenix, Arizona and plays violin for the Phoenix Philharmonic Orchestra. I requested that he contact a violin shop in Phoenix to determine if any sort of acclimation period and procedure would be required for the violin, as the humidity between Portland/Vancouver and Phoenix is significantly different.
